How's this for a video game theme song?

  • Punch-Out theme

  • For the record- I am not a gamer and I am not a headbanging metalhead.
I am, however, almost 42 and still have an appreciation for 70's and 80's style heavy guitar/synth rock. Growing up in the 70's and 80's also meant coming of age in the video game era.

Apparently this is the theme song to the arcade game "Punch-Out". I think it first appeared in the bars around 1985. I remember it well although I never actually played it. I remember it because my best friend at the time, Greg Coco, relieved his stomach of two shots of tequila behind one of them at a place in Corpus Christi called "The Cannery". That's not necessarily meant to be funny. It's just a fact. We were only in our early twenties.

I'm asking you to listen to this all the way through even if it's not your favorite style of music. It's not my favorite style either but the musicianship and the clean, tight sound really grew on me. Listen to it at least three times. Be patient. The longer you stay with it, the better it gets. If you make it past the first 38 seconds, you'll see what I am talking about.

PS are those thirds or sixths I hear Laurie? Or both?

I'm pretty sure I know which line you are talking about and I think that's thirds. It would be easier for me to tell by looking at the line versus just listening to it. I'm more of a visual learner. :-)

Great song. I don't remember that game, but I'm sure I never played it. I was always over at Galaga or Centipede.

Cool song! (after 3 times listening to it....) I found myself dancing like Courtney Cox in that Bruce Springsteen video...Then I did a little bit of "The Robot."
